Named fellowships

The following fellowships have been established by program sponsors in recognition of leaders in the field:

Satish K. Srivastava Developing Country Eye Researcher Travel Fellowship

Satish K. Srivastava, PhD, passed away Feb. 12, 2019, from complications of heart failure. He was Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Tex., and a long-time member of the LE section of ARVO. Dr. Srivastava came to the US from Lucknow, India, in 1966 to work with Ernest Beutler on glutathione metabolism in lens and red blood cells at City of Hope Medical Center, Los Angeles. In 1979, he moved as a very young full professor to the Department of Human Biological Chemistry & Genetics at UTMB.  For over 50 years Dr. Srivastava published his research on lens metabolism, oxidative stress, and molecular mechanisms leading to cataract formation. He welcomed scientists and clinicians from numerous diverse cultures to become part of his lab. Dr. Srivastava was devoted to his family and to the dozens of students and postdoctoral fellows who now lead research teams and institutions worldwide. By honoring a legendary figure in lens and cataract research, The Satish K. Srivastava Developing Country Eye Researcher Travel Fellowship seeks to perpetuate the excitement of learning and discovery embraced by Dr. Srivastava throughout his career as a scientist and thought leader in vision research.
